Last March 8th was the International Day of Working Woman. As every year, Hypatia organized several activities claiming the degrading situation of the woman in the world; one of them was a debate about prostitution. This really touched me, so I began to investigate about this topic to write an article expressing my disagreement and trying to convince other people to reject legalization of prostitution.
As I recently said, from a falsehood you can obtain whatever you want, so I decided to refute the main arguments to legalize prostitution to avoid false conclusions.
I regret and apologize for not investigating as deep enough as I would like, but I had no time to study the huge amount of documentation available.
Once prostitution is regularized, it will remain only people that choose it freely
The majority of people that enter into prostitution don’t do it under a free rational decision. They don’t choose it to earn more money, because they are not in agreement with their current salary and they want more, but because of a matter of survivance, the last chance whithin an hostile environment.
A prove of this is the fact that in the countries where prostitution is legalized, like Holland, Germany or Australia, most of prostituted people come from other countries, mainly from poor ones. As it’s almost impossible for poor people to afford the costs of migration (travelling, documentation), it’s obvious that they have to receive external help; that is, they are trafficked. It’s absurd to think they are business people that decided to migrate and prostitute themselves, as this was what they had ever dreamed with. On the other hand, a lot of prostituted people reported they have suffered sexual agression in their childhood; they were misleaded, kidnapped and forced by pimps.
Even if we could accept there are people that “freely chose'’ prostitution to earn money, they would be a really little minority, faced with the evidence that most of prositutes are forced.
Legalization really improves conditions of prostitutes
Reports shows that in countries where prostitution were legalized, it have been an increase of illegal brothels.
Brothel staff and police do very little to protect prostituted people. The protection often consists on registering everyday each prostitute to ensure they are not victims of sexual trafficking, they are more than 18 and they have not been raped or murdered the day before.
Even if the brothel offers bodyguards, they are never in the room with the prostitute and the client, where anything could happen. It follows from a study carried out in Canada that most of the men try to have sex without condom, and they usually offer more money to get it, quite a lot of success for obvuios economical reasons.
Despite a 60% of women stated that in several occasions they were helped to stop client abuses, a half of them said that, in some occasions, they felt they could have been murdered by their clients.
Prostitution is a worthy work like every other, and people should have the right to choose it
Prostitution is a violent, degrading and high risk activity: it’s often associated with phisical and emotional aggressions. A study carried out in the USA shows that women prostitutes have a rate of mortality 40 times higher than the rest of the population, and that half of the dead prostitutes had been murdered.
When people work on prostitution, they don’t have right to choose the type or duration of the sexual relation they are going to have; it’s the client who choose, the client who have the right to insult and abuse. Prostituted people are considered sexual objects, and they have to bear with humillating sexual practises unthinkable outside the context of prostitution, only for the fact the clients have paid. Then, should we accept any kind of humillation at work as long as it’s paid?
